The Seven Deadly Sins

What they are. What they look like. How to overcome them.

"Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."

— James 1:14-15

The seven deadly sins are not a Biblical list — but every one of them is addressed throughout Scripture with intensity. They were catalogued by the early church as the root dispositions from which most human sin and suffering flow. Each one is a distortion of something God made good.

A Note on Grace

These sins are called "deadly" not because they are unforgivable — nothing is unforgivable except the rejection of God's Spirit — but because, left unchecked and unrepented, they kill. They kill relationships, callings, character, and the soul's capacity to know God.

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

— 1 John 1:9
